Fishburn and Hughes: The thirty-three heroes of Uruguayan history. In 1825, under the leadership of Lavalleja, a band of Uruguayans conceived a plan to free their country from Brazilian rule. Secretly they crossed the River Uruguay and made a series of successful attacks on the vastly superior Brazilian forces.
