Fishburn and Hughes: "Plaza de la Victoria was the original square and centre of the old city of Buenos Aires. When Juan de Garay founded the city in 1580, it was here that he planted his 'tree of justice', a wooden pole symbolising punishment and authority. Today it forms part of Plaza de Mayo, the principal square of the city." (208)
