Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus, Roman general, rival of Julius Caesar, 106-48

Fishburn and Hughes: A Roman general and statesman who in 60 BC joined Julius Caesar and Crassus in the First Triumvirate. During Caesar's subsequent absence in Gaul, Pompey's senatorial influence grew. In 49 Caesar returned from Gaul and the following year defeated Pompey at the battle of Pharsalus. Pompey was pursued by Caesar into Egypt where the Emperor Ptolemy XIV, in whose hospitality he had trusted, had him murdered in the hope of winning Caesar's favour. See Plutarch. The Theologians
