Fishburn and Hughes: "The thirty-three heroes of Uruguayan history. In 1825, under the leadership of Lavalleja, a band of Uruguayans conceived a plan to free their country from Brazilian rule. Secretly they crossed the River Uruguay and made a series of successful attacks on the vastly superior Brazilian forces. As a result the provisional government of an independent Provincia Oriental was formed and was joined to the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata." (199-200)
